Today on Good Morning Interwebs, we spoke with Philip James, CEO of Snooth.com. Snooth is the world’s largest wine site, and Philip shared an impressive rundown of the company, told us about Al Capone’s involvement in American selling and gave some great tips on how to eyeball a good bottle of wine.

Here are some highlights:

:30. Philip describes what Snooth is, and how the site works.

2:00. Philip explains why Snooth does not sell wine. And gives an awesome history of wine regulations in the U.S.

11:00. Philip gives a tour of Snooth’s wine colleciton. And a large bottle of Veuve with an Ostrich leather label.

15:00. Philip explains why large bottles of wine can be bad for the wine in them. And describes the history of large bottle names.

16:50. Philip redeems boxed wine. And explains why screw top bottles came about/why the lack of a cork doesn’t devalue most wines. (But plastic corks are still embarassing. Don’t buy those.)

Those of you who tuned in live got an excellent rundown of how to eyeball a good bottle of wine. Philip helped Alli and Meghan estimate the price/value of a bottle of wine brought to their last party by a friend (an Altos las Hormigas Malbec). Ustream decided to stop recording after about 19 minutes, so here’s a little recap of the top things you should pay attention to when looking for a good bottle:

1. Check the punt: The indent on the bottom of a wine bottle is a good indicator of glass quality. If the bottle is flat on the bottom, the glass isn’t very well made. The deeper the indent on the bottom of the bottle, the more expensive it was to make.

2. Look for seams: Wine bottles are often made by melting two sides of glass together. More expensive bottles are made of blown glass, meaning they don’t have any seams at all. It may be rare to find a bottle under $15 without seams. But if you’re paying over $20, a lack of seams becomes more important.

3. Etchings on the glass: Similarly, it costs more money to etch the glass. Etchings on the bottle up the cost — and likely value — of wine bottles.

4. Don’t worry about years for wines made outside of Europe: Vineyards in California, New Zealand and South America are often located in areas with consistent temperatures. If you know a winery in one of these places that you like, chances are that its quality will be consistent over a variety of years. In Europe, where rain and sunshine are much less predictable, wine age matters more.

5. Download Snooth’s iPhone app: Snooth will tell you where and how to buy a good bottle of wine while you’re out shopping. And give you reviews of specific wines you’re interested in.

I’ve found neither ustream nor livestream to be a reliable platform. anyone have another suggestion?

fashism:

Meghan is in London so Alli was joined by guest host Charlie O’Donnell for yesterday’s Good Morning Interwebs. They got a behind the scenes glimpse of the Web 2.0 Expo. Here’s the recap:

0: Arrive at mission control and meet Stephanie who makes the magic happen

0.45: Check out dennis ShamWow headset: “IT slices, it dices, it’s foursquare!”

1:12: Dennis worries his shill isn’t appropriate for this high-level audience

1:50: He just got back from presenting at Mobile Monday in Amsterdam, where there were 3 Dutch Nates!

2:45: Brady Forrest, the MC and organizer of the conference, says hi, we discuss Dennis entrance, their smoke budget was cut when the economy collapsed

4:15: Brady has a friend that sells electronic cigs. Cigarettes are designed to kill you, kids.

5: Things Dennis is most excited about: Boxee and Hot Potato

6: Will “food spotting” be the next hot app? People do love taking photos of their food… In fact, Foursquare will be integrating photos soon.

7:50: Breaking foursquare into layers of bureaucracy—creating rewards for people besides mayors

8:35: Brady calls for more badge transparency. Also, Naveen is a liar.

9:45: Naveen’s crazy ergonomic keyboard that looks like its made for paws is super loud. Solution: Buy him a muffler? Perhaps a foam body tarp?

11: Alli realizes that every episode of GMI we talk about foursquare – obviously a huge traffic driver

11:30: GMI is Dennis’ favorite web show, second to Criss Angel, natch

12:20: Dennis says Criss Angel is an asshole, though he secretly wants to be him

13: Alli was a My Little Pony girl, also Strawberry Shortcake and Cabbage Patch Kids. Dennis used to smash the face of his sister’s Preemie, he’s sorry now. Also, Charlie sure know a lot about dolls from the 80s.

15:45: Bryce Roberts is the poor man’s GPS

16:15: Poor man’s augmented reality in Amsterdam= cut out mustaches

16:45: It’s more dangerous to use the bike lanes in NYC than the regular streets because of stupid walking people. Solution: get a pedestrian bumper.

18: Charlie is a GMI groupie. All bald white guys look <strike>alike</strike> similar.

18:45: Charlie has a good question: What is the next O’Reilly conference topic after Web 2.0? The Real-Time Web? Charlie says he doesn’t need real time information, but that’s what people said about social. Also, that’s not information overload, it’s filter failure. Foursquare is a filter as are Twitter clients. A cool filter that was built sucks out foursquare check-ins from Twitter and puts them into a specific list broken out by city.

20:30: 2-minute call for dennis. He didn’t bring any intro music! But off he goes…

We were hoping his talk would be livestreamed, but not so much, however it might appear here if we’re lucky: http://tv.web2expo.com/

Today on Good Morning Interwebs’ Wake Up With a Start Up:

Alli and Meghan went to Buzzd to speak with Nihal Mehta and Deepen Shah.

We were reminded that start up hours do not often begin at 9A, but it was a great show. Nihal and Deep just got back from visiting Apple and Twitter in San Francisco and gave us some dirt on what those companies are up to as well as some really great insights into the state of social in mobile. (Bonus: Deep closes the show with some pretty amazing beat boxing skillz.)

If you’d like to visit specific clips, here’s what we talked about and when:

1:05: Our tech crew (Alli) improved our camera by 500%. By wiping the lens.

2:00 Buzzd COO Kevin Bradshaw preps for our cooking segment off camera. (We don’t have a cooking segment.)

2:20 Nihal checks out his hair and we get an Axe ad. Ladies, believe us, it was hard to control ourselves.

3:55 Nihal describes what buzzd does and what sets them apart in the mobile social market.

6:30 Nihal tells us what it looks like behind the scenes at Apple and Twitter in San Francisco and what Twitter is working on in geolocation.

8:00 Nihal used someone else’s thumb to get past a biometric scanner recently. We decide drunk homeless people are going to be the “key rocks” of the the future.

9:55 Twitter’s new retweeting feature went live yesterday. We discuss how it will help professional usage of the service and why geolocation matters for social.

11:53 Alli admits that she loves to steal Meghan’s identity online and post things from her accounts/computer. (Like the time she took a picture of me sleeping with my iPhone and posted it to my Flickr account. (I’m not bitter though.))

13:00 Welcome Deep!

14:30 buzzd is getting more location aware.

15:00 Alli has a Webster Hall app on her iPhone. It’s mostly for pimps and stalkers.

18:00 There’s a rash of companies that put out press releases about iPhone apps that will never exist. Why?

19:30 Alli explains what Stalqer is.

25:00 Nihal says that 99% of consumers want to consume, 1% want to create. buzzd built its iPhone app for the 99%, while other mobile companies are going after the active 1%.

27:00 Why buzzd over other social mobile services?

28:40 buzzd is letting other companies integrate hashtags into their applications to help standardize mobile locations. Deep gives a shoutout to “Mike,” who helped make that happen. Good work Mike.

35:30 Deep beat boxes. Awesomeness.

GMI is back from our brief hiatus, now broadcasting from ustream. loving the scrubbing so you can actually visit our chapter markers.

For drug smugglers and crotchety neighbors

For drug smugglers and crotchety neighbors

the fine cuisine of the skies, without the price of a ticket

the fine cuisine of the skies, without the price of a ticket

GPOYW: We took headshots of ourselves at the office today.

GPOYW: We took headshots of ourselves at the office today.

The "public option"

saucy:
